Callaway Supercharged Freelander

The 2002 Freelander, the newest four-wheel-drive vehicle from Land Rover, combines the best in off-road technology with exceptional European on-road handling and responsiveness. The Freelander Supercharged- Performance by Callaway, on display for the first time at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, takes the Freelander's on-road performance to a new level while maintaining its off-road integrity- demonstrating Land Rover's breadth of capabilities.

Callaway has highlighted and enhanced the on-road driving qualities of Freelander by supercharging the engine, modifying the suspension and giving the exterior a sportier look and feel.

"The new segment-defining Freelander introduces the Land Rover brand to a wider range of customers with a starting price of under $25,000, making it an ideal vehicle for performance and off-road modifications," said Jon Williams, Land Rover North America vice president of Marketing. "With Freelander Supercharged, Callaway has focused on delivering the ultimate small premium performance SUV without compromising the off-road characteristics that are synonymous with Land Rover."

Added performance features include:

* A unique front bumper integrates an aerodynamic splitter, thus stabilizing downforce—for when the going gets fast. The splitter is complemented by a metallic silver skid plate—for when the going gets deep and tough. Callaway Competition designed carbon fiber brake ducts especially for additional heat dissipation.

* Rocker panels provide aerodynamic "skirting" that further enhances vehicle stability at high speeds. Styled to suggest a strong, metallic extruded beam, the rocker sports dual-purpose body colored end caps. True to the Callaway Freelander’s dual nature, the concept accounts for the unique needs of both on- and off-road enthusiasts.

* The entire exhaust system is modified to gain equal power distribution for twin exhaust pipes, adding a new stainless muffler design. The pipes are capped with resonated stainless still exhaust tips, and are showcased by a distinctive dual-purpose billet heat shield. Designed to protect the rear bumper from exhaust heat, the chrome plated shield also serves as an aesthetic "finale" by integrating design cues from the concept’s wheels. The rear of the vehicle sports an "air diffuser" lip in the lower bumper area.

* A special Callaway carbon fiber engine cover wraps around the Freelander Supercharged, hinting at the engine’s remarkable performance potential.

* The Callaway engineering team applied a custom larger-diameter swaybar, as well as stiffer springs and valving to Freelander’s standard four-wheel independent suspension. As a result, concept sits a full two inches lower than the standard Freelander.

* To match performance potential with stopping power, Callaway adapted the race car bred Callaway C12’s brake system for the Freelander concept. The enormous 332 x 32 front and 304 x 25 ventilated rear rotors are grooved for added performance. Each rotor is also topped off by custom aluminum rotor hats, painted in Callaway blue to match the concept’s brilliant Azul blue body color.

* Massive brake calipers comfortably manage even the most spirited driver's on- or off-road behavior. To direct additional air flow to the concept’s brakes, Callaway also designed and fabricated exclusive carbon fiber brake ducts, integrated in the front bumper.

* High performing 255/45/R18Z Pirelli P-Zero tires are mounted on distinctive 18-inch two-piece lightweight alloy wheels. The wheels, featuring custom wheel hub pilots were hand selected by Callaway Compeition to showcase the aggressive Callaway-branded brake calipers. The wheels also feature Callaway branded wheel caps.
