OLD MAN EMU SHOCK ABSORBERS

By DAVID LOVEJOY

Not so very long ago I had a slight problem with one of our test products which left us without a full set of shock absorbers. At this present moment in time I am still waiting for that problem to be sorted out so that I can tell you all about it…

However an even bigger problem was what to do with a test vehicle with nothing to test! One E-mail and a phone call later all was sorted. Simon and Liz Buck of Devon 4x4 (01769-550900) – one of the best know off-road specialist companies in the UK – volunteered a set of OLD MAN EMU shock absorbers. OME as they are known all over the world are one of the best known suspension systems in the world and as such were more than welcome. I have used many different types of shock absorbers over the last twenty years both on off-road vehicles and on rally cars, but I have never had any experience OME, so this is a new one on me!

The first thing that strikes you when you open the box is the quality, even the cardboard looks good! The next thing to hit you is how bright the damn things are – this is one shock you won’t lose in the workshop. All the parts you require are there, as are the fitting instructions (always handy) and no odd sized nuts…

The compression resistance is strong, but no where near some shocks I have tried, so fitting is very straight forward. The shocks Simon and Liz supplied are for a MK1 Discovery of standard ride height - this being one fitment for a vast range.

I have yet to drive the vehicle as the fitting was only very recent and my social diary is a whirl at the moment; however I am reliably informed by Andy Summers of East Devon Off Road Experience (01404-42280) that he is impressed.

Have a look at the photos for now and I’ll let you know more soon!
