Harnessing the sun On his most recent trip into the depths of the Libyan Sahara, Difflock.com contributor, Toby Savage capitalised on the sun's rays to keep his battery charged up. Toby's trips are what he loosely describes as 'work' and his mission was to accompany a Geography field trip from Reading University into remote territory in the Sahara. With a lot of scientific equipment and laptop computers to run, demand on the batteries of the two Land Rovers was going to be excessive. Both Toby's Carawagon and Dr Kevin White's Camel Trophy 110, were fitted Siemens ST20, 20 watt, solar panels to ensure the health of their batteries. 'A flat battery 100 miles into the sand sea is a frightening prospect as its a bit difficult to push start a Land Rover in soft sand and 30 degree heat' commented Toby. With a steady 20 watts of charge going into each battery for a full 12 hours of sunshine each day the group had no problems. Good news for UK off roaders is that he Siemens solar panels are also World beaters in our dismal climate. UK suppliers of Siemens solar panels and the Solsum control box to prevent overcharging are: A.B. Butts of Leicester, Tel. 0116 251 3344 Fax. 0116 253 6377 The set up featured retails at about £220 + vat More Useful information on Solar power at: www.siemenssolar.com If you want your products featured here, please send us details to info@difflock.com |
