Mercedes 'baby' 4x4

Mercedes plans to counter the threat posed by the BMW 3 series based X3 4x with an SUV version of its popular A class.

Inspired by the likes of the RAV4 and the Freelander, the compact 4x4 has been referred to as the MLK and Mercedes plans to widen the brands appeal to the younger buyer with this new model.

This mini M class will form part of the line up of the 2nd generation A Class due out by late 2003. A roadster version is also set to grace the showrooms.

Apparently a 4x4 version of the A Class was always planned as an option to the line-up but following the problems the early cars suffered with stability a 'raised' version did not seem to be the most sensible way to go.
