These might initially look like two prototypes of the same vehicle but they are in fact two different vehicles. The one on the left is the Volks Wagen and on the right is the Porche Cayenne. Both are set to reach the showrooms in early 2002.

While sharing the same platform and many of the same parts they will be totally different in terms of performance and powerplants. The Porche will house 450bhp and 340bhp V8s and cost around £60,000 whereas the VW will start with a more sensible 3.2 V6 at £30,000. Originally the VW was to be called the COLORADO but GM announced it was developing an SUV under the same monicker so the marketing bods at VW will now have to come up with something else. Looking at the names for the rest of their fleet you shouldn't hold out for anything exciting though; Lupo, Sharan, Bora, Golf, hardly passion inspiring are they!
