When you buy a Pinzgauer what you are buying is the most superbly egineeried chassis/axle combination that could ever be fitted to an off-road vehicle. just take a look at this:

1 The VW 5 Cylinder Diesel Engine with turbo charger and intercooler produces 100kw @ 4,500rpm and 280Nm @1,600rpm. The engine is liquid cooled.
2 ZF Fully syncromesh 5 speed manual gearbox or ZF 4 speed Automatic
3 ZF 2 speed fully syncromesh transfer box
4 the Pinzgauers unique differential splits the drive between each half axles. The differential are fitted with pneumatically controlled locks which are operated from a switch in the cab and lock the drive across the axle immediately at any vehicle speed, preventing an individual wheel from spinning. Essential for operation in difficult conditions
5 Pinzgauer axles transmit the drive via half shafts to a portal hub reduction gear set, then to the wheel. Each half-axle is completely independent
6 Pinzgauer Portal wheel hubs have internal gears which provide the final transmission speed reduction and torque increase, also improving the ground clearance
PORTAL HALF AXLES:
Half axles are articulated independently at the differentials. Portal Design of the hub provides extra ground clearance. The portal half-axles are individually sprung, each half axle pivots around the centre line of the chassis tube, which locates the differentials.
No cross-axle shocks are transmitted between the axles or wheels This allows the Pinzgauer to travel at high speed cross country and provides a safe, stable and smooth ride. The Pinzgauer has an extremely low level of vibration transmitted into the vehicle, this makes it ideal for use as an ambulance or for sensitive electronics

A 6x6 chassis being assembled in the Guildford Factory

The independent suspension on each half shaft. The leaf spring serves to force the wheel onto the ground should the adjacent wheel be lifted.

Once the chassis & Axles are assembled the body is added. The bottom of the body is Galvanised and the rest is coated (not painted) by a Cataphotitic Process. The complete body is dipped first in primer then top coat. All seams are sealed with PVC and cavities are wax injected. Finally it is al undersealed.
