THE CHARITY

WHAT IS RHINO ARK AND WHY IS IT NECESSARY IN UK?

  • Yes, you do live thousands of miles away from the problem but have you ever been or wanted to go to Africa on safari? Did you know that the rhino is now one of the worlds most endangered species?
  • Are you interested in people, the people of Kenya whose farms are destroyed by roaming wild animals and who are committed to supporting a conservation project despite being besieged by breadline battles?
  • Kenya has suffered the annihilation of 98% of its wild rhino population in a period of only 18 years.
  • Rhino Ark is a charity based in Kenya and the UK. Our aim is to raise money for the Aberdare Sanctuary Project, and ensure the future of the rhino for future generations.

THE ABERDARE SANCTUARY PROJECT

  • In 1985 The Government of Kenya realised that only drastic solutions would prevent the total loss of its rhinos. It opted for the establishment of high security "sanctuaries" in good rhino habitat surrounded by an electric wire fence.
  • Once the 380 kilometre fence is complete rhinos can be translocated from the nearby private game sanctuary, Solio Ranch, into the Aberdares. This will relieve the burden of overpopulation on the Solio Ranch and allow the rhino to continue with their breeding programme. At present the Solio Ranch has the highest density of black rhino in the world.
  • The Aberdare National Park is ideally suited as a rhino sanctuary. The Salient is prime rhino habitat with an abundance of natural water and is free from tick borne diseases.

DOES THE SANCTUARY ONLY BENEFIT THE RHINO?

  • No.

  • Benefits to Man
  • The local farmers are also beneficiaries of the fence:
  • Their families, crops and livestock are protected from marauding wildlife and already farmers are reaping the benefits.
  • The waterwheel generators inside the Sanctuary provide power for both the electrified fence and the people who live in the surrounding villages.
  • The rainforest provides all the water for Nairobi.

  • Benefits to other wildlife
  • The Aberdares and particularly the Salient used to contain many hundreds of rhino but it is also famous for its indigenous elephant population. There is also an abundance of other smaller game including many cat species.
  • The fence provides the forest with protection from human destruction.
  • The Aberdare Sanctuary concept is right because it offers a practical and sustainable solution to the co-existence of fauna, flora and man.
