This month I have been mostly upset by . . .
(Apologies to the Fast Show)

The appalling standard of driving by the tourists (also know as Emmetts or Grockles) that have plagued the West Country (my home) since the Easter Bank Holiday.

Most years it gets pretty bad down here between Easter and the end of September - with high points for each Bank Holiday. But this year it has been unbelievable – like lemmings running over a cliff! Come to the West Country and crash your car!

For God’s sake calm down will you (yes you) it’s supposed to be a holiday. Read the road signs – a 40mph speed limit on a contra-flow on the A30 means 40mph not 20mph or 80mph! And stop driving like you’re attached by a towrope to the car in front. Oh, and if you see an accident DON’T slow down to look at it, so creating your very own accident black spot!

And another thing… Caravans! I like caravans, an excellent idea. But if you are going to tow one do it properly. It is now an endorseable offence to have an unbalanced load; it is classed as dangerous driving…
After competing in the Exmoor Challenge last month - which was a superb event I might add – a couple of things come to mind.

Firstly. If you are inexperienced in ‘matters off-road’ but have all the equipment that money can buy, don’t spoil the day for the more experienced off-roader. Why not hang back a while and look, listen and learn what to do. If your vehicle is equipped with driving aids from the factory, use them rather than the winch. Finally when somebody takes the time and effort to help you (repeatedly), don’t just ignore them down in the Pub, buy them a drink and say thank you.

Secondly. If you are a Senior Officer for a National Park Authority and a CHARITABLE event that has taken place on your patch for some years (prior to you taking up you position) get your facts right BEFORE reporting inaccuracies to the National Press. This will save repeated embarrassment at a later date. Also helping local people raise money for a local good cause will be beneficial in the long run….

All the best until next month….
