A Jeep vehicle generating its own electricity

DaimlerChrysler unveiled the Jeep Commander concept vehicle during the sport utility's world debut for media at the LA Auto Show. Featuring fuel-cell technology that generates its own electricity, Commander was right at home pictured in a rain-forest setting at Paramount Studios. Commander represents the next step in fuel cell technology, providing a ten-fold decrease in emissions while providing a driving range of up to 600 miles.

HOW IT ALL WORKS . . .

Fuel Cells Generate their own electricity, Oxygen from the air and hydrogen (extracted from fuels such as petrol, methanol and synthetic fuels) are combined in a chemical reaction that produces electricity and water. Fuel efficiency could be improved by 50% with 90% lower emissions.

Fuel Vapouriser: By applying heat, liquid petrol is converted to gases to ensure cleaner, soot-free combustion
POX: Vapourised fuel is combined with some air in a Partial OXidation reactor, producing hydrogen and carbon monoxide
Water-Gas Shift: Steam acts with a catalyst to convert most of the carbon monoxide to harmless carbon dioxide and the additional hydrogen. Carbon monoxide is harmful to fuel cells and must be reduced to less than 10 parts per million
PROX: In the PReferential OXidation stage, injected air reacts with remaining carbon monoxide over a catalyst to produce carbon dioxide leaving hydrogen-rich gases.
Fuel Cell Stack: Hydrogen gas, combined with air, produces electricity to move the vehicle with virtually no pollution - emitting primarily water vapour
