NISSAN ALPHA TRUCK

Nissan's press book from the Detroit Auto Show says this about the alpha T: "…The concept's appearance might be a little startling to those who have come to view trucks as sedans with open trunks." Startling? Nahh. More like uhh, well, never mind.

We'll just call the looks of this thing, umm, different. Yeah that's it. Different. That "different" begins with an industrial look inspired by high-end power tools. That's right, Nissan says, power tools. The four-door crew-cab type body has butterfly-style rear doors, a massive front fascia, a retractable rear window, a full moonroof, a deep cargo bed with an electronic tailgate and slide-out bed floor and, last but not least, an integrated tailgate-mounted tool box. So, the truck's styling is inspired by the items that would get stored in this box, right? Whatever.

Getting away from appearances, the mechanical goods are a bit easier to comprehend. A 4.5-liter DOHC V8 makes 300 horsepower and is backed by a four-speed automatic transmission. The alpha T also has four-wheel drive. The off-road capable suspension is home to four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and huge 22.5-inch wheels with 265/60R22.5 tires.

Moving inside, the saddle-colored leather cabin has several compartments and storage spaces, a retractable multifunction display screen with a navigation system, a brushed aluminum steering wheel and a rear compartment climate control system. There's also a rear seat fold-down table/armrest for those riding in back.
