SUSPENSION:
Completely unique for off-road vehicles. Four stages of rising rate variable springs and damping. Gas springs and passive fluid coupling. Guaranteed for 100,000K.

STEERING:
Rack and pinion, genuine zero scrub radius. No kick-back, virtually unaffected by punctures. Power steering options when not fitted as standard.

BRAKES:
Disc brakes all round. Power options when not fitted as standard. Dual circuit, triple for 6—wheelers and 8—wheelers. Parking brakes on four wheels using drums in the centre of the discs.

CHASSIS & BODY:
PRP (plywood reinforced plastic) using modern epoxy saturation technique. Internal sills and ‘boxes’ filled with structural foam. Steel and aluminium re-inforcing laminated in as required. Separate steel sub—frames and roll protection cage.

Body panels also of PRP providing remarkable dent proof panels not affected by most normal small bumps and scrapes. Damaged panels are easy to repair and cheap to replace.

AFRICARS are guaranteed for 8 years against corrosion regardless of location or usage.

TRANSMISSION:
All AFRICAPS are supplied standard with permanent all—wheel—drive 8-speed transmission. The AFRICAR drive system is passive and allows no wind up between axles or loss of economy due to A~TD. Dominant drive is to the front wheels. Tests have shown this to be superior in mud, sand, cross—winds and rough road conditions to dominant rear wheel drive.

2WD, 4WD (on 6-wheelers) and 4WD or 6WD (on 8—wheelers) options are available as indicated.

A 12 speed option is available and is especially recommended for the heavy load carrying 6—wheelers.

ENGINES:
AFRICAR engines are supercharged, through-flow, opposed piston 2-strokes. A type of engine used, over the years, most successfully in high-performance medium and heavy trucks in Europe and the USA o It is also an engine form that lends itself to future developments in ceramics and heat retention.

The engines are based on a modular build-up system based on a single cylinder twin piston unit. Using twin cylinder four piston and three cylinder six piston units with two bore sizes, a logical family of six petrol (alcohol or gas) and six diesel engines is arrived at. Power ranges from 38hp to over 300hp.

The engines are designated P1, P2 etc and Dl, D2 etc. They are defined by their power output because the capacities would be misleading. Output per litre is between 1.4 and 2 times equivalent 4—stroke output.

In general the middle sized engine offered with each model is ideal for a combination of performance and economy. The smaller engines are fine for light use under reasonable conditions and the larger engines give extra performance for high altitude territories, mountainous regions and heavy sand.

PERFORMANCE:
All AFRICARS have a comfortable cruising ability of over 7O~ph (110kph). The larger engines provide speeds up to l6Okph (higher in the case of the performance vehicles). Acceleration is always brisk because of the relative light weight of the vehicles and, likewise, economy is outstanding.

Full performance and economy figures will not be available untill the first full production vehicles go on test. The above observations are based on experience with pre-production prototypes.

MAINTENANCE:
AFRICARS ARE DESIGNED TO BE EFFECTIVELY MAINTENANCE FREE. Oil and oil filter changes are at normal intervals.
