NRG4x4 Raises over £400 for charity!
28th Aug 2009

NRG by name and ENERGY by nature! The weekend of 22 August saw a turn out of over 20 people from NRG4x4 at the Ibstock Country Fair to build an off-road course to help with the fund raising activities.

The task? To transform many tonnes of concrete pipe, bus stop curbs, paving slabs, telegraph poles, and railway sleepers into a set of obstacles that the visiting public would donate money to be taken round. In addition we were able to provide, courtesy of Alldrive and Tankmania, a reverse steer Land Rover to further tempt donations!

The result? 8 obstacles to frighten all: The bridge of doom – a log run constructed from telegraph poles and sleepers; The rock pit – lots of big chunks of granite to drive over; A natural side slope – just to get people ready for the axle twister; The pipe climb – made from large sewage pipes and guaranteed to tax suspension and traction capabilities; The seesaw; A double axle twister to frighten both passenger and driver; The trailer trap – narrow ramps on and off of a commercial trailer just to worry people; And the bone shaker – a run of odd sized sewer pipes which shook everyone, and vehicles, to pieces.

Work began on the Thursday with over 80% of club members – pretty good considering it only started at the beginning of May and it was a week day – on site building the course with the aid of a brand new JCB kindly lent to us by J McCanns Ltd for the occasion.

Friday saw much of the same with the majority of work complete by Friday night leaving just the collection of the last few bits on Saturday morning.

Saturday afternoon saw the course complete and ready for safety trials – which it passed with flying colours ready for the Show on Sunday. The only major problem was the sunburn that everyone was suffering from!

Sunday morning dawned cool and bright with the promise of a good day and The Club was standing by ready to start rides at 10:00.

Our first customer was with us at 10:03 and we had a steady stream for the rest of the day giving rides to over 300 people with a constant stream of 6 vehicles traversing the course resulting in fund raising of £402 which will be split equally between the Multiple Sclerosis Society and The County Air Ambulance.

The show ended at 5 and the dismantling began with the team – now swelled by friends of  Club Members – took all the obstacles apart, took down the marquee and entertainment facilities, and returned all the borrowed materials and equipment.

All in all a great time was had by all and by 8 O'clock on Sunday night NRG4x4 sat down to a fish and chip supper whilst trying to build their ENERGY back up to plan for next years show!

Lastly, just a big thanks to everyone who helped, donated, and hurt themselves!
