QUICK TIP: Discovery Dahboard Illumination

Onecertainty of vehicle ownership is that as every vehicle starts to age certain things will start to fail. It'll usually start with the small niggling things before moving on to the large components. Dashboard illumination is an area that frequently fails. It's just a tiny bulb after all . . .
Some dashboard or console lights are a real pig to get to and replace so they are frequently left at the bottom of the to-do list and the owner just gets used to not seeing the controls.
On a 300 series Land Rover Discovery the central console is illuminated by a single bulb. It is easy to fix requiring nothing more complicated than a screwdriver (and a new bulb!) but if you've never done it before you may not know where to start.

The central console on a 300 series Discovery is illuminated by a single bulb. Without it you cannot see the heater/vent dials at night

First thing to do is pull off the dials themselves. Just pinch them firmly and pull away. They are not fixed.
Loosen and remove the two small screws sitting just underneath the right- and left-hand dials.

Grasp the black plastic shroud and pull away.

The single bulb is in the middle of this panel. Pull out gently (it is a bayonet type not screw fitting)

Replace bulb and reassemble.
