The Land Rover hub nuts are one of the very few components of the brand that have remained pretty much consistent throughout the different models and years (how very un-British!) You can now get three different kinds of Hub Nut Sockets in the Difflock Tool Store depending on your requirements and budget.
A plain 2 inch AF (52mm) socket has insufficient depth for
normal use so an open ended 'box' spaner was developed. Open at both ends with cross drilled holes that you could insert an extension bar or screwdriver through to torque up the hub retaining nuts. This was OK for all models up until the late nineties as the preferred method of applying the 'correct' torque was to hand tighten it until it bites then back it off 1/4 turn. The required torque was so small this was sufficient and just about as accurate as you could get it. A Tab washer ensured that nothing moved.
With the introduction of the TD5 models a higher and more specific torque was required. To accommodate this a box spanner with a 3/4 inch drive slot is available for use with a breaker bar or torque wrench.
Now Difflock can also offer a 1/2 inch drive Chrome Vanadium socket that has been specifically manufactured for the hub nuts on Land Rover vehicles. Many standard sockets of a similar size are just not deep enough to do the job but this item has been manufactured just that little bit deeper. This allows for precise location on the nut and reduces the chances of slipping while tightening to the correct torque.
Being 1/2 inch drive it is also much more convenient for thise who don't use 3/4 drive tools or previously used a 1/2 drive bar with an adapter which can affect the torque settings. (not recommended for an item as critical as the wheel bearings!)
You can find a wide range of specialist workshop and maintenance tools in the Difflock Tool Store. Many of which have been specially designed and manufactured by us.
