Gerber Legend Multi-Pliers 800
By Xavier Gosselin
7th Jun 2009

You won't live without it...

Gerber Legend

Quite a bold statement, but since I got it in my hands I have been spending my time wondering how did I manage all those years without such a tool.

I classify the multi-tools in two categories, the pocket size ones that are small and light enough to be in your pocket without being noticed and that you use once in a while, and the utilitarian ones that may be a little bit more bulky, but are the ones you take with you each time you know you will need a tool, any tool.

The Legend, is the true utilitarian. It may not be the most classy multi-tools, the lightest, but you know you can count on it, you know it will not fail you.

It feels solid in your hands, its rubber inserts mean that it will not slip even if it is wet or a bit oily. The mechanisms are smooth enough so you can open the blade (or other tools) with one hand, but it also has all the safety in place -thanks a neat locking system-  to ensure you will not close the same blade or else, with your fingers still in the way.

Like many people doing DYI work in the house or on a vehicle, you end up with a lot of tools, many toolbox and you are not looking forward to the moment when you need to find the one plier or screwdriver that you need.

Life is so much simpler for me now. Job to do somewhere... no problem, I just take my Legend with me, and see what happens... I found that in more than half of the cases, I did not need anything else and it saved me a lot of time and stress. If you need anymore that what is included in this tool, it means that the big toolbox was required anyway...

What I like:

The one-hand opening blade is one of the key aspect of this tool. It is almost 70mm long and halfway serrated. Some would prefer a single plain blade, not me. If I only wanted a blade I would use a plain knife. This is a multi-tool, it needs to offer as much flexibiliyy of use as possible

The three flat (1.6, 4 and 5.6mm) and the one #2 Phillips drivers provide the common sizes for most jobs.

The plier jaws are very strong and extremely grippy which is the key feature that I expect from any plier.

What I did not like as much:

Not much to say.... Maybe the repleacable cutter that I did not find sturdy enough to my liking, but nothing to worry about as such

In conclusion

I have been using the tool for over 2 months now, and I just love it. Quality products do not come cheap, but they last a long time and you will not be disappointed or become bored with it!!!

The Gerber range of multi-tools is great, and if the Legend is not exactly the one you like, I am sure you will find the one you want or need amongst them.
