Land Rover 'JUNO' Prototype

This is the sole surviving prototype of the Land Rover 'Challenger' project from the early 1990's. With stiff competition emerging from Japanese manufacturers Land Rover started to develop the next generation Military Vehicle.

Up until now the Land Rover Defender and earlier Series IIIs had served in almost every country in the world under a huge variety of flags. But more and more governments started to look East for their defence vehicles with the Nissan Patrol Militar becoming a hot favourite.

This vehicle is based on a Discovery platorm. The chassis is slightly longer at 115" but there are a number of unmistakable Discovery components all over this prototype.

The interior is straight out of an early Discovery, with just an additional binnacle on the Dashboard for extra switches and instruments.

The powerplant is a modified 200TDI unit (exact specifications are unclear but it has been heavily 'fiddled' with).

Eventuallly, although it would have been a very capable vehicle, it was not thought to be versatile enough for general military use. From the research undertaken during the 'Juno' project was bourne the Defender XD - or Wolf - a Military specific Land Rover that has such specialised equipment and features that it's only relationship with the civilian Defender is it's general 'look'

This prototype is now owned by the Dunsfold Land Rover Trust. (see picture below with two other Land Rover Prototypes) It has been discreetly exhibited at a couple of events over the summer with most people not realising what it is or the signficance of its development by Land Rover and the British Army.
