Welcome to a new series of articles that we hope will introduce or simply refresh the basics of 4x4 maintenance for everyone. In the series we will take each vehicle in turn, and explain our detailed approach to keeping everything tip top and ready for action. As the series progresses, and with your help and feedback, we hope to cover many other topics including off road or expedition preparation.
We have called the series Back to Basics because we are starting with the everyday essentials that cannot be avoided BUT will save you money! These are the relatively easy, uncomplicated bread and butter tasks that are the ideal starting points for those of you who are either new to vehicle ownership or simply want to try some vehicle DIY for the first time. For those seasoned mechanics amongst you, we hope that our series will prompt you to send us your own tips and recommendations that your years of experience have honed.
Over time this will build up into an indispensible reference library to servicing and maintaining your vehicle.

Land Rover ZF Automatic Oil & Filter change
On current Range Rovers and Series II Discoverys, the autobox is sealed for life and needs no servicing. However, on older vehicles with the ZF fourspeed automatic gearbox, the oil and filter must be changed at regular service intervals. The recommended change is every 24,000 miles under normal driving conditions. Usually, then, its done as part of the normal 24,000-mile service. more >> |

Replacing the Land Rover 300TDi timing belt
All those of you with a 300TDI engine Land Rover should know that these have a replaceable timing belt that is used to drive the Fuel Injection Pump and Camshaft via a drive gear on the Crankshaft. According to the Land Rover Workshop Manual, this belt must be replaced every 72,000 miles or six years, whichever comes first. If it should fail it will cause serious engine damage. The wiser amongst you will know however, that it pays to replace the belt a little sooner at 60,000 miles more >> |

Difflock Guide to removing and refitting the Viscous Cooling Fan on TD5 engines
Unlike the Land Rover engines of yesteryear, the TD5 engine is shoehorned under the bonnet with very limited room for access.
